Measuring Rates of Reaction (PAG C8) Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is meant by the rate of a chemical reaction?

It is how fast reactants are used up or products are made in a reaction.

How do you calculate the average rate of reaction from your results?

Average rate = change in amount of reactant or product ÷ time taken.

In a gas syringe experiment, what do you measure to find the rate of reaction?

You measure the volume of gas made in a certain time using the gas syringe scale.

Why might you place a reaction flask on a balance to measure the rate of reaction?

So you can see how quickly the mass goes down as gas leaves the flask.

How does the disappearing cross method show the rate of reaction?

You time how long it takes for a cloudy solid to form and hide the cross; a shorter time means a faster reaction.

When you draw a rate of reaction graph, what goes on the x-axis?

Time goes on the x-axis (horizontal axis).

On a rate of reaction graph, what does a steep line mean?

It means the reaction is fast because the amount changes quickly in a short time.

Why should you repeat rate of reaction experiments and find a mean time?

Repeats and a mean make your results more reliable and reduce the effect of random errors.

Give one factor you can change in a PAG C8 experiment to see its effect on the rate of reaction.

You can change the concentration of a solution, for example by using more or less concentrated acid.

In a fair test to measure rate of reaction, what should you do with other variables?

You should keep all other variables, such as temperature and total volume, the same and only change one factor.

What safety equipment is important when measuring rates with acids like hydrochloric acid?

You should wear safety goggles to protect your eyes and handle the acids with care.
