Dynamic Equilibrium Flashcards

1️⃣ Familiarise yourself with the flashcards:

  • Look through all the flashcards to see what's on both sides.
  • Make sure you understand the information on each card. If something's unclear, click the link to the revision notes at the bottom of the page for more details.

2️⃣ Test yourself:

  • Look at the question or prompt on each card and try to remember the answer before flipping it over.
  • Check the answer and make a note of any cards you find challenging and need to go over more.

3️⃣ Consistently Review and Practice:

  • Use spaced repetition: spend more time on the cards you struggle with and go over them more often.
  • Regularly review all the flashcards to help you better understand and retain the information over time.

Note: We may include questions that have multiple correct answers. It's useful to remember specific examples to understand these concepts better.

What is a reversible reaction?

A reversible reaction is one where the products can change back into the reactants.

What is meant by dynamic equilibrium?

Dynamic equilibrium is when a reversible reaction in a closed system has forward and backward reactions happening at the same rate.

Why is it called dynamic equilibrium?

It is called dynamic because both the forward and backward reactions are still happening, even though the amounts of substances stay the same.

What must be true about the rates of the forward and backward reactions at equilibrium?

At equilibrium, the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the backward reaction.

What happens to the amounts (concentrations) of reactants and products at dynamic equilibrium?

The amounts of reactants and products stay constant over time, but particles are still reacting both ways.

Why must dynamic equilibrium happen in a closed system?

It must be a closed system so that no reactants or products can enter or leave; otherwise the balance could not be kept.

Does dynamic equilibrium mean there are equal amounts of reactants and products?

No. Dynamic equilibrium means equal reaction rates, not equal amounts. There can be more of either reactants or products.

What is meant by the position of equilibrium?

The position of equilibrium tells you whether there are more reactants or more products present at equilibrium.

What happens to the rates of the forward and backward reactions as a reversible reaction moves towards equilibrium?

At first the forward rate is high and the backward rate is low, but over time they change until both rates become equal at equilibrium.

What can happen to the position of equilibrium if you change conditions like temperature or pressure?

The position of equilibrium can shift so that either the reactants or the products are more favoured, but it is still a dynamic equilibrium.
